The core curriculum of IRCHS is comprised of three elements:

  1. Academic coursework that prepares the student for a Florida high school diploma, addresses Florida Sunshine State Standards, and readies the student for post-secondary school pursuits;

  2. Specially designed IRCHS classes that respond to the Department of Education's SCANS Report and foster the development of a wide range of competencies and foundations.

  3. Elective coursework that offers opportunities for students to explore the arts, humanities, physical fitness, and career preparation.

The core curriculum achieves much of its innovation and creativity through integration.  All academic courses are woven together with the thread of a common historical time period.  Over a four-year cycle students will study eight significant eras of history, including the Ancient World, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Classical, the Romantic, the early 20th century, and the late 20th century.  Core classes such as English, Mathematics, History, and Science participate by highlighting important achievements, people, and events relevant to the era.  Such integration fosters noticeable gains in students’ comprehensive understanding of the important relationship between historical development and human progress.

Starting second semester of sophomore year, most students are encouraged to enroll in at least one or two dual-enrollment classes at Indian River State College (IRSC), whose Mueller Center is walking distance from the IRCHS campus.   As these classes become part of the student’s high school schedule, he/she may work towards completion of a certificate, an A.S. Degree, or an A.A. Degree, all the while receiving exposure to the college campus with both its opportunities and demands.

In addition to its core program of study, IRCHS offers two specialized programs: a Visual and Performing Arts program and a Golf program.
