Physical Education

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn fitness concepts and conditioning techniques used for obtaining optimal physical fitness. Students will benefit from comprehensive weight training and cardiorespiratory endurance activities. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of strength training, aerobic training, and overall fitness training and conditioning. The course includes both lecture and activity sessions. Students will be empowered to make wise choices, meet challenges, and develop positive behaviors in fitness, wellness, and movement activity for a lifetime.

This class is designed as an introduction for a student who has never played the game of golf. Instruction is based on the fundamentals of the golf swing, starting from the hole and working out. Students are first taught to putt, then move further away from the hole and are taught to incorporate chipping, pitching, and finally full swing into their emerging golf game. Initial lessons are held at Vista Plantation Golf Club on the putting green. Subsequent lessons are held on campus. There are no fees for this course.

The purpose of this course is to develop and enhance healthy behaviors that influence lifestyle choices and student health and fitness. Students will realize the full benefit of this course when it is taught with an integrated approach. In addition to the physical education content represented in the benchmarks below, specific health education topics within this course include, but are not limited to Mental/Social Health, Physical Activity, Components of Physical Fitness, Nutrition and Wellness Planning, Diseases and Disorders, Health Advocacy, First Aid/CPR, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Prevention, Human Sexuality including Abstinence and HIV, and Internet Safety.
