The purpose of this course is to provide grade 9 students, using texts of high complexity, integrated language arts study in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language for college and career preparation and readiness.

Through the application, analysis, evaluation, and creation of complex ideas that are often abstract and multi-faceted, students are challenged to think and collaborate critically on the content they are learning. This course will analyze literature through student-centered discussions, individual presentations, essay writing, and creative projects.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the semantic, structural, and rhetorical resources of the English language as they relate to the principles of effective writing. The course also provides a variety of writing opportunities calling for the use of different styles and tones.

The purpose of this course is to study and practice writing, and to study literature. Students will learn to use the modes of discourse and recognize the assumptions underlying various rhetorical strategies. Students will also acquire an understanding of the resources of the language and of the writer’s craft. They will develop critical standards for the appreciation of any literary work and increase their sensitivity to literature as a shared experience.

This course is designed for 11th-grade students reading below grade level. The course includes foundational skill standards until a student has mastered the standard. 

Teachers will use the listed standards that correspond to student needs based on diagnostic assessments and adjust according to ongoing progress monitoring data.
